I’ve always had a passion for helping others. When I got my first tutoring job at age 18, I knew that teaching children was the perfect fit for me. This inspired me to get my Master’s Degree in Education from Rollins College, at which time I was already teaching 3rd through 6th grade students with various learning needs, including high-functioning autism, Asperger’s and ADHD.

I learned so much in my first year, most importantly that addressing the learning needs of individual students was vital in optimizing their understanding of material. After graduating, I taught 4th and 5th grade at Princeton Elementary School in Orange County, Florida for ten years. During the summers, I would tutor children in Pre-K through 6th, helping them gain confidence, and strengthening academic skills leading into the new school year.

I am currently tutoring full time, as it is the most powerful tool for reinforcing what is being learned in the classroom. Every child has a different way of learning. Tutoring allows me to cater to their academic needs which can vary by subject area or even content within the same subject. Many students have exceptionalities that need to be addressed when developing a curriculum for them. I've taught and tutored students with exceptionalities including dyslexia, dysgraphia, autism, ADHD and gifted. My younger son is both dyslexic and gifted, so I understand as both a parent and a teacher the importance of supporting ESE students. As your child's tutor, I will provide them with strategies and tools to insure their school experiences from elementary school on are both positive and rewarding, and in turn, building their confidence. I want my students to love to learn. I am excited to work with you and your child to help achieve academic and personal success!

In my spare time, I love hanging out with my boys, Elliot and Ollie. They are my world, and have taught me so many invaluable lessons. I am a writer (writing is one of my favorite subjects to teach) and am working on getting published. I have dreams of going back to school to get a degree in counseling, as I do believe that educating is far more than just academics, it also involves being the child’s advocate. To me, teaching is not only educating, but also trust, compassion and having an open, creative mind. I would love nothing more than to help your child realize his or her greatest potential.

"Two of my three children were fortunate enough to have Ms. Erin Sumner as their fourth grade teacher. Her knowledge and teaching style was beyond what we had expected. She is able to create an environment where students enjoy learning without even knowing they're learning. Erin incorporates humor and fun in her daily teaching routine, and is very knowledgable in all subjects. Because of her, my children were well prepared for middle school and excel in all subjects. I truly believe that Erin is dedicated to her job and the success of children. She will remain one of my kids' favorite teachers of all time!"

"Our son had the pleasure of having Ms. Sumner in 4th grade for language arts and reading. With a history of fluency issues, tied to years of ear surgeries, Erin helped him grow in reading and writing, by introducing him to strategies and taking the time to learn his interests. As a result, his love for reading and writing grew quickly, which set him up for success in 5th grade and beyond. Erin is patient and caring, yet holds high expectations for all of her students."

"My daughter had the pleasure of being a student of Ms. Erin Sumner's in the 4th grade at Princeton Elementary School. Ms. Sumner was always enthusiastic and excited about the subjects she was teaching. She was also very kind and patient, and willing to help when needed. She left a lasting impression on my daughter."
